The most straightforward method is to open your piano roll editor and navigate to the bottom of the window. MIDI notes will have a set of bars at the bottom of the screen indicating their velocity value. Left-click and hold, then drag the slider up or down to increase or decrease its velocity.
Bear in mind that you can still individually adjust desired note velocities at any time. Simply right-click to deselect all the notes and then left-click whichever one you want to change separately, as some may sound better suited than others.
fl studio change velocity of multiple notes
The Piano Roll Editor header shows the number of selected notes and the region name. When multiple overlapping notes are selected, the Piano Roll Editor header shows the chord name. When no notes are selected, the header shows the name of the most recently selected MIDI region, or the number of regions selected.
When you edit the velocity of multiple notes, the relative differences in their velocity values are retained. If the velocity value of any of the selected notes reaches the minimum or maximum value (0 or 127), none of the notes can be adjusted further.
You can override this behavior by holding down Option while dragging. This technique allows you to continue altering the velocity values until the selected note reaches the minimum or maximum value. By overriding, you alter the velocity relationship of this note to the other notes.
Some software instruments included with GarageBand provide multiple articulations for MIDI notes. For example, a software instrument for strings might include legato, pizzicato, and staccato articulations, while a drum kit might include articulations for closed and open hi-hat. Articulation IDs provide a way to access these articulations without using complex key combinations.
Colour, velocity, start time, duration, pitch, pan and much more can all be configured, giving you precision control over your notes. If you ever stuff up, just hit reset to change it back to the defaults.
This might seem obvious right? Not so. Moving up or down with the arrows actually changes the view position in the piano roll. Moving the notes requires you to select them, hold Shift + Up/Down arrow, and they will move up or down a semitone at a time.
Everyone should try editing the velocity of their notes when writing a chord progression, melody, bassline or any sort of MIDI pattern. It can certainly help to add a degree of humanity to an otherwise bland chord progression.
To discard the lengths of notes and turn them back into steps, select the desired notes and hit Shift + D. Now you can treat it like a step sequencer but with the added flexibility of using multiple notes.
You have the added ability to customise the expression of the newly-generated notes by moving the colourful pan, velocity, release etc. knobs, which can be an interesting way to get unique variation in your patterns. Lastly, you can group these notes by selecting the corresponding button if you so wish. Now you have a new, compelling rhythmic pattern, all in a few clicks.
While you can change the snap settings to the desired state (none in this case), sometimes you only want to temporarily drag a selection of notes off the grid, maintaining your normal snap settings for the majority of producing you intend on doing.
If you select multiple notes (also in other editors), you can only drag the velocity up to the point where the loudest one hits 127, and only down until the softest one hits 1. You can override this 'limiting' behaviour by holding down the option/alt key. This will give you several notes with either value 1 or value 127, which can ruin a midi performance. Although there's always Undo...
The behavior is going to be the same in the Piano Roll and in the Event list. Wether you raise velocities in the Piano Roll or the Event list doesn't change the fact that if one of the selected note's velocity is already at 127, you won't be able to raise the velocities of the selected group unless you hold Option as Erik recommended.
Pianists consciously change the velocity of their key strikes while playing depending on how expressive they want each note to be. On top of that, human error ensures that there will be a slight variation in the velocity of each successive key, even when the pianist is trying to make them sound the same. We can use velocity randomization in FL Studio to more closely imitate a real performance.
I programmed the snare to be triggered on every step. We can see the velocity data for each note in the velocity window. Notice how they are all exactly the same. We could go in and manually change each one, but this would be tedious and time consuming, especially if there are lots of notes. With the Randomizer tool, we will add some variation using a computer algorithm to speed things up.
Bear in mind that you can still individually adjust desired note velocities at any time. Simply right-click to deselect all the notes and then left-click whichever one you want to change separately, as some may sound better suited than others.
The editing grid can be changed by tapping on the button with the "three lines" icon in the bottom toolbar. When moving clips (or changing their lengths if "Ends" is enabled), movement will be constrained to this grid (for example, if it is set to "1/4", clips will move by quarter notes).
This editor lets you draw or edit notes (move, change lengths, transpose, etc.) and their velocities (loudness). Selecting and navigating around the view works the same as in the Arranger.
The editing grid can be changed by tapping on the button with the grid icon in the bottom toolbar. When moving notes (or changing their lengths if "Ends" is enabled), movement will be constrained to this grid (for example, if it is set to "1/16", notes will move by 16th notes.
The "Rel" (relative) toggle changes how notes snap to the grid: normally, Xequence will make sure that all notes always stay on the selected grid no matter what. However, in "Rel" mode, notes will actually move in grid size increments, but not necessarily snap to the grid. So, for example, if you have a note that starts one 16th note away from the beginning of the clip, and you have the grid set to "4", if you now move the note one increment to the right, it will actually end up one quarter note plus one 16th note from the beginning, not one quarter note.
The lowest and highest values (or only one if only a single event is selected) of the current selection are shown as buttons on the left next to the controller ribbon. Tap a value to edit it. If multiple events are selected, the selection will be scaled to accomodate the new value, while leaving the unedited value unchanged.
Xequence's keyboard controller is very versatile and offers a highly configurable, scale-aware keyboard with over 70 included scales selectable from almost a dozen categories (a chromatic scale (all notes) and "normal" mode with black keys are also included). It can be either single or dual and can be "velocity sensitive" (tap a key's bottom for full velocity, or the top for nearly no velocity). Two velocity curves are available on the Settings screen. The key size is freely adjustable using the "Width" slider.
You will now see a sequence of notes generated using the default settings (which are actually quite boring). Note that PolyHymnia by default replaces the currently selected notes, and keeps doing that each time you change one of its settings, so you can keep tweaking and have the contents of the clip update automatically. If you would instead like to add another set of notes without overwriting the existing ones, just deselect all notes before changing settings or tapping "Add / Update".
This tab controls the velocities of the generated notes. The values generated by the operators are mapped to the velocity range set by the "Min" and "Max" sliders at the top. If you do not want any velocity variation at all, just set both sliders to the same value (double-tapping a slider will set it to the default velocity configured in settings).
If you decide you want to make changes to the repeated clips (delete some of them, move them, or edit the notes only in some of the clips), then you can use "Convert loops to clips" in the "Process" menu. This will convert the loop into actual (but still linked to the original) copies. You can now move them around, delete some of them, etc.
Note, however, that these clips are still linked to the original, so editing the notes inside them will modify all converted clips and the original. If you want to change the data of only one single clip of them, select it and then choose "Unlink" from the "Process" menu, which will make it a truly independent copy (it will also get assigned a new number, visible on the clip).
Adjusting the length of multiple notes at once is fast and efficient. It can be done so the notes keep their relative lengths or so they all snap to the same length. Hold shift while dragging a note to make all selected notes snap to the same length:
Lastly, use the Velocity tab to edit note velocity. The velocity ofselected notes are represented by vertical sliders that can be moved upor down to increase or decrease their velocity. When editing velocityfor multiple notes, use two fingers to create a velocity ramp betweenthe left- and right-most selection.
