I have a virtual machine on a x64 machine that I need to run SQL Server 2008 on, and I have another x86 virtual machine that I also need to run SQL Server 2008 on.
What is the best way to install SQL Server 2008 on both of these virtual machines at the same time?

You can install it in the following way:
Install SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition
Install the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2008 R2
Run the setup for the Developer Edition.
Run the setup for SQL Server 2008 R2.
After completing the setup for SQL Server 2008 R2 go to SQL Server Configuration Manager and open the Add/Remove SQL Server Components menu item.
Select SQL Server - Standard Edition under Component Name, then press the OK button.
You will now have a SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition installed. You will have to uninstall the SQL Server 2008 first before you can install SQL Server 2008 R2. You can do this as follows:
Go to Start > Administrative Tools > SQL Server Configuration Manager.
Select SQL Server 2008 under SQL Server Components.
Click on Uninstall button.
After running the SQL Server 2008 uninstaller you can install the SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition as described above.
